Our History
Tradition and modernity.
In 1888, shortly after he had finished building the premises of the Lyon daily newspaper Le Progrès, architect Prosper Perrin was commissioned to design a grand hotel on place Bellecour, the pre-eminent Lyon square that holds a special place in the heart of every Lyonnais.Perrin conceived a façade in Haussmannian style, and added a rotunda and an anion dome - a nod to the Renaissance, the era that launched that launched the city's bustling trade and prosperity.
Perrin's mixed inspirations of tradition and modernity became the hotel's distinctive hallmark.
A 1912 article from Le Progrès enthuses "In a maison where refined comforts have been taken to such heights, everything that constitutes modern luxury is splendidly provided;"
Nearly 100 years on, this remains a perfect description of Le Royal.
